Who was E. A. Hooton?
Earnest Albert Hooton was an American physical anthropologist who spent most of his career at Harvard University, where he established one of the most prominent anthropology departments in the United States. There is actually more genetic variation within his racial groups than between them, and the features he used for classification (like skin color and facial shape) represent only a tiny fraction of human genetic diversity.
We now understand that many of the traits Hooton emphasized are recent evolutionary adaptations to different environments rather than markers of ancient racial divisions. Skin color, for instance, appears to have evolved multiple times in response to different levels of solar radiation, making it a poor indicator of overall genetic relationships.
